"The story is called the 'Shades of Death.' The Shades of Death is just an area on a road... that road is called Saunder Station Road. It was about 2 miles from my house and the local story was that ... there is not a lot to it... but that there was a hermit who had a cabin and he had died at some point. I don't know what year, no one ever said what year, but the story was that the Shades of Death were haunted by his ghost. So, as a youth I had actually had a paper route near the Shades of Death...and my paper route maybe had 30 houses in that area, but at the bottom end of my paper route, it bordered those woods near the Shades of Death. Whether I was walking or riding my bike on my paper route, I would always try to go faster near that part of the neighborhood."
